The students in grades 3-4 attended a
performance by the Illinois
Philharmonic Orchestra on Wednesday, May 4. Prior to the trip, students were
introduced to musical terms, components of an orchestra and the job of a
conductor. Additionally students
learned about the composers and the musical pieces that they would be
hearing. Percussion instruments
were spotlighted in ÒConcerto for Percussion.Ó Students were amazed by the ability of
the soloist to play 16 different instruments throughout the piece! The other two pieces ÒPeter and the
WolfÓ and ÒGerald McBoing BoingÓ
were narrated pieces that combined music with story telling. The entire performance was phenomenal, however, the studentÕs clear cut favorite was
ÒGerald McBoing Boing.Ó The music helps tell the story of the
Dr. Seuss book by the same name. It
is a story of a boy who cannot speak but makes percussion sounds instead. He is ridiculed and bullied and called
Gerald McBoing Boing
instead of his real name Gerald McCloy. Gerald gets the last laugh when his uniqueness
lands him a job doing sound effects on the radio. Thus he becomes rich and famous!
Several of our 5th grade
students who are enrolled in the Violin Exploratory class performed for
patients at the Ingalls Rehabilitation
Center on Thursday, May
5. Ms. Prentice Johnson, one of our music teachers, has been teaching the
children this instrument. The
students did a superb job and put a big smile on many of patientsÕ faces that
day!
