Safety
Cyberpals are strangers. Never meet a cyberpal face-to-face without taking a responsible adult with you. Never give out your personal identity information unless a responsible adult says you can.

Manners. Understand your school's Acceptable Use Policy. Copying information from a Web site and pretending it's yours, is plagiarism. Downloading or sharing copyright protected software without the owners' permission is stealing.

Advertising
Learn to recognize online advertisements. Protect yourself, your family and friends by not giving any private identity information to any Web site without first asking permission of a responsible adult.

Research
Smart searching includes trying more than one search site and more than one keyword. Find out how to identify high-quality Web sites. Ask your teacher or librarian to help you find the best information on the Web or in books.

Technology
Cyberspace connects real people and information around the world. Remember to keep your passwords private. Ask your family to use a firewall and anti-virus software to protect your computer and files.

Learn the Internet

Want to learn about the Internet? Here is a definition of what the Internet is from Learn the Net. Visit Web Site

Imagine millions of computers all around the world linked together and exchanging information. In a nutshell, that's a big picture of the Internet. It's a global network made up of thousands of smaller networks. It's not that different from the telephone system, except you use a computer.

Even though the Internet is a global network, in many ways, it's like a small town. Let's say you want to send or receive mail. The Internet has electronic post offices for that. There are also libraries you can use any time you want, with millions of books and magazines and newspapers. Chat rooms are like the schoolyard or lunchroom, with people eager to gab anytime you want. And on the World Wide Web, you can play games, listen to music, and even order a pizza!

You'll find exciting places to explore and new ways to make friends. But you may find things that make you uncomfortable and people who will try to take advantage of you. Don't worry, we'll show you how to have fun and stay out of trouble. Visit Web Site
